Printing Your Voter ID Card

Whether you'd like to make your voice heard in the general election or during a party's primary, you'll need to register to vote legally in the U.S. A voter ID card is proof of your eligibility to participate in the democratic process, but you won't need to print it out.

Voter ID Eligibility

If you're a U.S. citizen and 18 years old, you can register to vote. Some states have residency requirements. Non-citizens cannot vote, and, in some places, people with felony convictions cannot vote either. If you're just now registering for the first time but want to vote in the next election, be sure to check your state's registration deadlines.

In-Person Registration

For in-person registration, head to your local election office and ask for a registration form. State services including the department of motor vehicles and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program office might also have registration forms, but you might want to call ahead of time to confirm. The registration form will require you to fill in basic information such as date of birth, ethnicity, social security number and mailing address. You can also select your preferred party. Keep in mind that, in some states, you can only vote in a party's primary if you actually belong to that party. You can vote in general elections regardless of your selected party. After registration, you should receive your voter ID card in the mail within several weeks.

Registering for Voter ID Card Online

To register for your voter ID card online, navigate to the official registration form on the Election Assistance Commission website. You can print it out and fill it out with a pen, or complete it on your computer and then print it. Either way, you'll need to send the finished form to a local election office. If you don't receive your card within several weeks, consider checking voter ID status online.

Check Your Registration

If you haven't received your voter ID card or you can't remember the information on it, it's possible to perform an online check on your voter ID status. Run a search engine search for "Can I Vote," and you'll find a website created by the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS). Run a voter ID search by name or by driver's license number.

Lost Voter ID Card

If you've lost or misplaced your voter ID, you can't print out a new one on your own. However, in some states, such as Tennessee, you can simply request a duplicate of your card by writing to your local election commission office. The good news is, you usually don't have to bring your voter ID with you to vote. It's for your own reference. However, in 35 states, you'll need to present some kind of identification before you step into a voting booth, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Common valid forms of ID include driver's licenses and other forms of state-issued ID. Some states are more strict than others when it comes to identification. For example, in some states you can use documents such as bank statements or utility bills as ID.
